The Federal University of Ceará is an autonomous institution linked to the Ministry of Education. It was created as a result of a broad public opinion movement. It was established by Law No. 2,373 , on December 16, 1954, and inaugurated on June 25 of the following year.

Initially, under the direction of its founder, Professor Antônio Martins Filho, it consisted of the School of Agronomy, the Faculty of Law, the Faculty of Medicine, and the Faculty of Pharmacy and Dentistry.

Based in Fortaleza, the state capital, UFC is an arm of the Ceará Higher Education system, and its activities are based throughout the state, in order to meet the different scales of societal demands.

The University is composed of eight campuses, named Benfica Campus, Pici Campus and Porangabuçu Campus, all located in the municipality of Fortaleza (headquarters of UFC), in addition to the Sobral Campus, Quixadá Campus, Crateús Campus, Russas Campus and Itapajé Campus.
